Each team consists of 22 personnel and is equipped with personal protective equipment for operating in unknown hazardous environments, NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) detectors, sampling/analytical systems, a decontamination system, and communications equipment used to reach back to experts via satellite. These are State assets that can be federalized. There is nominally one CST per State, as well as one each in Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.
